Formerly 2 separate parishes, Longstanton was unified c 1953 and subsequently has 2 churches.  The reason why we have two churches so close together can be found when we look at a combination of The Domesday Book; Victoria County History (Vol: IX Cambridge and the Isle of Ely) and the book Christianity in Southern Fenland by R McNeile. In due course I will try to summarise R McNeile’s explanation as it is very interesting but I think the situation in Longstanton is more complicated than it first appears.
