Cambridgeshire Crucifixion Victim Buried In Fenstanton

Sometimes, local history discoveries can be shocking but significantly advance our understanding of past customs and practices across our local region. Fenstanton is a village lying between Longstanton and St Ives (not very far away at all) and features in an article that has appeared in a national newspaper, the Daily Mail.

This discovery helps to illustrate why understanding the history of a local region is just as important, if not more so, than just concentrating on the history of individual villages. Villages, including Longstanton, Oakington, Swavesey, Fenstanton, Over, Cottenham etc were not communities living in isolation. Social, cultural, religious and trade connections were vital to village communities if they were to thrive. Customs and practices were undoubtedly understood and perhaps even shared from village to village. A crucifixion just a few miles away inevitably makes us wonder what happen in our villages.
