LDHS is delighted to report that the first Northstowe Phase 2 Consultation shows that the Heritage Core (former RAF Oakington buildings) have been incorporated into the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) plans for the new town. These buildings remain standing because of a petition organised by LDHS, coupled with the support we received from our members, supporters, local schools and indeed HCA themselves.
The work of LDHS has ensured that this 21st Century “new town” will in fact be a town with a properly recognised and preserved heritage. This unique and internationally important heritage will hopefully be made publically accessible for generations to come. The consultation did not detail plans for a heritage facility but LDHS will continue to lobby to try and make this a reality. There is little point excavating important archaeology if the finds are to be interred in the CCC store in a salt mine in the North of England.
To give Northstowe a unique identity and sense of place the archaeology of the site and the photographic archives of LDHS need to be in the public consciousness. This can only be achieved by the public display of information and material.
Please support our work by joining LDHS today.
We have already made a difference to the plans for Northstowe and we will continue to do so with your help.
