ANNOUNCEMENT JAN 2012: DUE TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS THIS WEBSITE MAY NOT BE UPDATED AS OFTEN AS WE WOULD LIKE. PLEASE BE REASSURED THAT LDHS IS STILL ACTIVE, STILL MONITORING NORTHSTOWE AND STILL INTERESTED IN ARCHIVING YOUR MEMORIES AND PHOTOS.

Please contact us if you can contribute to our archives by providing photographs or information on any topic covered by this site.

E mail address for website enquiries and offers of assistance: ldhs@hotmail.co.uk
Since our last news updates (Autumn 2011) LDHS has submitted a response to a SCDC Scoping Report  Consultation for Northstowe, as well as making a submission as part of the Northstowe Pre-Application Consultation. In addition, we are please to be able to announce that we have made a sucessful application to List the 8 Oakington pillboxes that remain out on the airfield site. The pillbox on Rampton Road (opposite Long Lane) has also been granted Grade 2 status, but the one on Wilson’s Road was not due to its poor state of repair. However, we are not prepared to right it off as it completes the set. To lose one of the original 10 pillboxes would be a shame, and a complete set is of greater value historically. If we can manage to get this pillbox restored we will let you know. If any one knows of a local bricklayer who may donate his time for free please do not hesitate to contact us.
In addition to 2011 achievements, LDHS continues to monitor the possible impact of Northstowe on the heritage of Longstanton & District. We will respond accordingly, once the formal planning application for Northstowe is submitted over the next few months.
We have much archiving and website work to do and extra help would be much appreciated. If any local resident would like to help with some of the administration please do let us know. Even a couple of hours per month would be a great help.
We are always looking for new members who are interested in helping us protect and promote the heritage of Longstanton, RAF Oakington and Oakington Barracks. Renewals take place from 1st April each year – but as a special offer to new members, if you join NOW your membership will run for a couple of extra months FOC; renewals for anyone joining now will not take place until 1 April 2013. For those of you living abroad we are experimenting with PAYPAL. Please email us if you would like to use this facility.

As usual we would like to thank our existing members for their continued support and we wish you all the best for 2012. This could be an historic year for Longstanton & District, please continue to help us ensure that our rural, social and military history survives, as a reminder to future generations of what was here before Northstowe.
And finally…..
Northstowe may well exist, at least on paper, by the end of the year. The new town will be part of the continuing history of Longstanton and Oakington, and the heritage society will archive the birth of this new town. History continues to be made, albeit in a new direction. Longstanton, Oakington, and Northstowe are inextricably linked – we all share the same history and we will share the future together; whatever that future turns out to be.
