OPENING CEREMONY OF THE OAKINGTON AIRFIELD MEMORIAL MARKER

An important event took place this morning to commemorate the shared heritage of Northstowe, Longstanton and Oakington – the opening ceremony for the Oakington Airfield memorial marker. It was lovely to share the occasion with new faces and old friends. Particular thanks must go to Homes England and the charity Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust for organising this marker.

This event has helped to vindicate the long-held position of the Heritage Society that the social, rural and military history of our communities should be preserved here on site. The LDHS Archives have a significant contribution to make towards the creation of a unique educational resource and visitor experience.

Many people present this morning expressed their appreciation for the Heritage Society and the work we have been doing over the last 20 years. There is much urgent work to do if the LDHS Archives are to be granted display and storage facilities within Northstowe or Longstanton. That was after all why donations have been made to the Heritage Society since our launch in May 2007.

ABCT is a charity so please do consider supporting their efforts . More information can be found at www.abct.org.uk and finally a reminder that the opening ceremony for the Bourn Airfield marker takes place tomorrow.
