July 2015 – Planning permission for phase 2 strengthens calls for a museum

With the Phase 2 planning application approved by the planning committee on 24 June, LDHS hopes that real progress will start to be made on the provision of a heritage strategy and museum for the new town.  The heritage society will make contact with the owners of the RAF Oakington site that is included in the phase 2 plans in the hope that the former guard house might be made available for heritage provision.

We are saddened that the former Station HQ (the building behind Paul Kitson of HCA in the photo below) has not been included in the newly approved phase 2 plans. Although it is clear that this area at the end of the long avenue could be a high value site, the demolition of this building will weaken the concept of the Heritage Core.

It is hoped that HCA will reconsider this decision prior to submitting detailed plans for the phase 2 area.  Failing this we call on them to use what remains of the heritage core area to develop a high quality museum and area between the Officers Mess and the former Guard House, which will include buying essays online an area where relatives of veterans can come, sit and reflect on the important contribution their relatives and RAF Oakington played in our national history.  The heritage core area should include a memorial to those who served at the base and who died in the line of duty.
