Snowy Farr: (1919 – 2007)
Walter Farr (Snowy) was born in Longstanton in 1919. Snowy also had a brother Frank. Sadly Frank Farr, who lived in Wisbech, died in January 2010. I believe Snowy may have had other siblings but we do not know the details of any others.
Snowy worked for a time for H K Stroude on Home Farm, Longstanton. Below is a photograph of Snowy and others mucking out the old yard on Home Farm, where the new houses stand today. This photograph belonged to Jim Fletcher and has kindly been given to LDHS by his brother John. Jim Fletcher also worked on Home Farm at the same time as Snowy. Sadly, Jim Fletcher died recently but we are so grateful to members of his family for supporting LDHS by contributing photographs and information on the village.
In this photograph of Home Farm, Longstanton, Snowy Farr is the second on the right. The trees behind them indicate where Brookfield Drive is today. Of course when this photograph was taken Brookfield House was still standing.
In this photograph taken on Home Farm, Longstanton, Snowy is standing on the far left.
Snowy became a road mender for the County Council in the Oakington area. He spent many years living in one of the bungalows on the right as you go from Oakington crossroads towards Girton. Snowy became a local legend later on in life by fund-raising in the centre of Cambridge, ably assisted by various living creatures.
For further reading see: Cambridgeshire Strange but True by Robert Halliday. The Cambridgeshire Collection based at the Central Library Cambridge certainly has at least one photograph of Snowy fund-raising in his usual pitch on the corner of Market Hill and Petty Cury.
