Many people in the village will remember Phyllis Brown and her husband who lived in St. Michael’s.
No historical record of Longstanton could be complete without mentioning Phyllis and her interest in the history of the village. Not only did she publish illustrated articles in the local magazine, but she was also responsible for ensuring that The Manor was listed – before it fell into total disrepair. In addition we have found amongst LDHS archives information that shows it was her work that resulted in the designation of a Conservation Area here in Longstanton.
Unfortunately most of the information she collated has since disappeared but I think some of her work can be found in the Cambridgeshire Collection. A resident of Clive Hall Drive found a box of Phyllis’ papers in the attic of her house. This box is safely in LDHS archives but we have yet to take a close look at what it contains.
Hopefully in due course we can upload some more information and perhaps a few photographs and copies of her beautiful drawings. We do have a photograph taken of St. Michael’s Well after the Brown’s had arranged for it to be “dressed” in the traditional manner.
