(CB24) Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2012 18:27:59 +0100
Dear LDHS Members (blind copy) and others, This afternoon, as expected, the Northstowe Phase 1 planning application was approved with “some reservations”. The developers apparently have to do more work in some areas. It would be nice to think that perhaps the lobbying of LDHS has helped to play a small part in this compromise decision.
The villages of Longstanton and Oakington have been rural communities for thousands of years, today that part of our history has effectively come to an end. The impact of Northstowe will be more enormous, and happen faster, than any of us can possibly realise. LDHS, whilst keen to record the past, is also aware that we are all part of the on-going histories of our communities. With the immanent arrival of Northstowe and Northstowe residents, LDHS is committed to ensuring that both past and more modern histories are recorded; and we will make future Northstowe residents welcome either as members or guests at our talks and other events. The histories of Longstanton, Oakington and Northstowe are inextricably linked and LDHS will endeavour to provide a cross- community focal point for all local residents where ever they may live within the local area.
LDHS, although an independent society, is committed to work with local government, the developers and Swavesey Village College and others to ensure that our archives can be made available for public education and enjoyment as soon as is practicable. We will shortly contact both Swavesey Village College and the Homes & Communities Agency with the aim of moving this project forward. Up until the planning permission was granted LDHS had a particular job to do, now that job is over and it is time to move on.
Once again many thanks to you all for your support. If you have access to a computer BBC Look East will be reporting on the planning approval at 6.30pm on BBC1.
