Archaeological Excavations set to commence on the site of RAF Oakington

Below is an announcement that LDHS has been waiting for for a long time. This information, sent to us by HCA, shows that work on Northstowe Phase 2 is another step closer and this in turn hopefully means that a comprehensive heritage strategy and a museum for Northstowe are a step closer too. LDHS is resolved to work with HCA and others to ensure that the heritage of the Northstowe site is protected and exhibited for the benefit of future generations. It is this heritage that will bind the new and existing communities together, via an understanding and appreciation of a shared history.

LATEST INFORMATION FROM HCA:

HCA are about to start undertaking our archaeology mitigation works on-site. We have commissioned Cambridge Archaeological Unit to undertake these works; and are excited to see what will be uncovered. As part of the works we will be organising community events and visits which we sincerely hope that you (LDHS & LPC)will get involved with and enjoy.
Site mobilisation for the archaeology works will take place this Thursday and Friday – and will involve the following vehicle movements which will enter the site from Rampton Road: Thursday 29th – delivery of plant. One lorry doing up to 8 trips starting around 8am. Once in there will be occasional visits to fill the fuel bowser. Friday 30th – delivery of welfare units. 7 deliveries from around 10.30am. Once in there will be weekly servicing visits, probably only involving a single truck.

If you have any queries regarding any of the above then please feel free to contact me.
