What’s In A Name?

The name Northstowe comes from the historical name of the Hundred in which the new town will be situated.

A Hundred historically was a subdivision of a county, having its own court.

The Hundred of Northstow (with no e!) is mentioned in Domesday book but has existed for centuries since then. The Northstowe Hundred consisted of the following parishes:

Girton, Impington, Landbeach, Lolworth, Longstanton, Madingley, Milton, Oakington, Rampton and Waterbeach.
