An on-line data base which looks into English Society at the time of the Norman Conquest has been set up by researchers at Cambridge University and King’s College, London. System limitations apply but these are clearly indicated on the site. See Introduction To Longstanton & District for more information on the Domesday survey of 1086. There is still much more information to add in due course. Hopefully this new site will provide an insight into Domesday England.

It has been announced by the local media that Oakington Immigration Centre will close in November 2010. It is likely that this announcement means that the government and the developers are close to submitting a revised planning application. LDHS has spent the last few years lobbying both government and the developers in an attempt to ensure that the archaeology and heritage of Longstanton, Oakington & Westwick, and RAF Oakington / Oakington Barracks are safeguarded for future generations. Both Andrew Lansley and Terry Fuller of the Homes and Communities Agency have provided us with statements for our 2010 newsletter, which will be distributed to our members shortly.
LDHS hopes that Northstowe, the eco-town, will respect the heritage of the site and the surrounding villages; and that exhibiting this heritage will provide Northstowe with an unique identity and its residents with a sense of community. We will continue to lobby for the provision of a heritage facility as part of the Northstowe development, preferably located within the former Officer’s Mess building, Rampton Road. Please support our campaign by joining the society today.
