BBC Domesday – 25 years on

15th September, 2011

Below is information sent to the heritage society by Bob Jopling, a former teacher at Hatton Park School.

Dear Hilary,

You may know all about this already but I write just in case …

Twenty five years ago my class at school took part in the BBC’s ‘Domesday Project’. The BBC’s aim was to get schools all over the country to write about their home areas, ours being the five or six grid squares containing Longstanton. Certain aspects were specified and I believe we could choose others; some of our seventeen were traffic, housing, attitudes, nature and a ‘snapshot’ of sights and sounds during a five-minute period. It was our first big use of the computer and we thought it very clever!

Anyway, the BBC has now re-issued the country-wide results as ‘Domesday Reloaded’. Our bit is on

and the following page

and I wonder whether you’d think it worth adding to your archive.

Our reply to Bob is ….. a fantastic contribution to our knowledge of Hatton Park School and Longstanton. We are hoping that the school will do something similar in 2012 to mark what could well be the last year that Longstanton remains a rural community. It is possible that Northstowe could be granted planning permission by then. If that is so Longstanton will cease to be a rural community overnight and in an instant we will become a suburb of a new town. Records like the one above, will become of increasing value, as we try to safeguard the heritage of this rural and former military community.
If you can help by supplying information, memories or photographs please do get in touch. We would love to hear from you.
