Hilary Stroude Collection – Oct 2005
Preparations to sandbag an unxploded bomb(s) found on the airfield near the old bomb store. The bomb store was located near to the Rampton track just past Brookfield Farmyard. This photographs shows the gate opposite Brookfield Farm. After packing with more and more sandbags the majority of Longstanton residents were evacuated (to Swavesey Village College or The Dale) prior to detonation. A smaller bomb (500lb?) which had been exploded, prior to this one, had far less of a fuss made. I do not know if any sandbags were used but it was detonated on a Sunday evening c 6pm. We were eating sunday dinner at The Manor, in the dining room (The old Medieval Hall), and the blast shook the windows!

Longstanton and District
District District is defined as consisting of Northstowe and the village of Oakington and Westwick. It can also include the area associated with the South West Fen Edge and our local tracks and by-ways, so the interactions between local communities can be properly understood..
